He hails from Florida, where he served as editor-in-chief of the University of Florida’s student-run newspaper, The Independent Florida Alligator. This year, alongside student journalists from UF and the University of Missouri, he won the Online News Association's award for student journalism, for a project that investigated the fertilizer and phosphate mining industry. The expansive project told the story of a sprawling, powerful industry and the people and resources most affected by it. His entry in the series, an environmental justice story focused on the industry's resilience to climate change and storms, was awarded 1st place in the Hearst Journalism Awards' explanatory reporting. Throughout his career, he has reported across many beats for the Miami Herald, NPR-affiliate WUFT, The Daily Beast and the Miami New Times.
