Jess King is a values-driven systems thinker with 20+ years of experience leading equity-driven public sector organizations. She is passionate about innovation and the common good. She became the founding Executive Director of the Steinman Institute for Civic Engagement in 2023.
Prior to this, she served for four years as Chief of Staff at the City of Lancaster PA, leading the administration’s strategic priorities, communications, human resources, and grants under management of more than $55 million.
Jess spent most of her career leading community and economic development organizations. She was Executive Director of ASSETS from 2010 – 2017 and grew the organization to include an SBA Women’s Business Center, a Social Enterprise Incubator, a Community Development Financial Institution and SBA Microlending Intermediary, an Impact Fund, and a B Corp Employment Agency.
She directed the Union Project and the Pittsburgh Urban Leadership Service Experience early in her career in Pittsburgh, where she fell in love with cities and building economic opportunity.
Jess earned her MBA from Bard College, her BA from Eastern Mennonite University, completed the Impact Investing Programme at the University of Oxford and the Advanced Social Enterprise Certificate at Duquesne University. She was a Baldwin Fellow with the Lancaster County Community Foundation, and a Local Economy Fellow with Common Future.
Jess was born and raised in Lancaster County, PA and lives with her family on a small working farm.
